How the hell does sat nav work?

Greetings.

Odd one this.

So i am trying to sort my sat nav for the france trip at the moment. I have the address etc, no problem.

I also got a certain disk from sergei industries which is supposed to have euro speed cameras etc on it.

I also thought it would be handy to see petrol stations and the like and figured it must know these! Anyway, after some work i have sort of figured this out . . I go into information, then i choose 'on location' then i set a distance - which seems odd but whatever. . . Then it seems to give me a list of them all.

I have no clue if it also shows them on the map, as i have not got that far - is this what should happen?

I am an it consultant - how can this be so damn hard? And no, i wont, i refuse to read the bloody manual!

(joking)

The distance is a setting you enter to limit how far away to look in the database. If you enter 5 it will only show the sites within 5 miles radius. As I recall, on the 2006 it listed the sites with the distance. It would also show them on the map. On the 2009 it will show the listing on the main screen and a map with the location on the split screen. As you scroll through the listing the map is updated for each site. Also on the main screen it will show the distance and general direction (via arrow) to the site.

So in order to get the petrol stations from here to france then, which is just over 1050 miles to my destination . . . I have to stop every hundred miles, ask the sat nav to search for petrol stations based on location, and then scroll through the whole list to add them to the map?

You guys serious? My audi just like, had them on or off for different types of things . . .

Or does it constantly refresh for everything 100 miles from my current location?

This is either a total farce . . Or a very weird system respectively.

Your system only lets you put in 100 miles? Have you tried 999 miles? The way I use mine is, I drive until I have about 150 miles range remaining and then I set the system to show me what's available. My system doesn't do a radius but gives me everything far, far away (I was looking for gas in Folkestone and it was telling me there was a station in Brugge and also in Manchester). You'd think it would be integrated enough to know that with a range of 150 miles you aren't going to make it to Manchester from Folkestone. It also allows me to select the brand by spelling it out. I have noticed that it doesn't put the icons on the main map, though, but that could also be an error on my part because I, too, don't RTFM.

You also need to select "show icons" in the menu options

In 'info' menu if you select 'fuel stations' with no name or distance it will show you a list of all stations with the closest first. This list will constantly update as you are driving. If you accept one as a destination the sat nav will take you there. Automatically the icons on the map will be activated and when in map mode all stations will be marked. You cannot activate speedcams and fuel station icons at the same time. Whilst you are heading to your destination you can deselect icons or re search for speedcams and again get icons back on the screen.

The BMW system isn't perfect (nor in my experience is Garmin or Tom Tom) but if you play around and / or then it's not all bad. I have not read the manual but have played with about 90% of the menus. Keep learning new things on the go. If you can't find a destination just call BMW Online

One tip, go to google maps and select your key destinations prior to travelling and get them sent to your car. Retrieve them in 'my info' menu. Much easier and quicker sometimes than typing them into idrive

Is it because another 'man' has 'written' the manual that some of you refuse, out of sheer obstinacy to . Totally bloody illogical. Matt, by the time you've buggered about asking people on here, surely you could have read the manual and worked it out. Is there a smilie for totally perplexed!

Oh, I get it - probably a case of "I'm not going to be beaten by a machine, I can work it out for myself".........oh dear. Got me laughing anyhow.

Its a bloke thing. I'd rather sell the car than read the manual!

Working out how to reset the tyre pressure monitor on the E90 without reading the manual nearly cost the car a kick in the face. (You need to click init on the OBD, then HOLD it down for 3 secs, I was just clicking again and getting very very annoyed when 30secs later the warning came back!! )

I need someone to be man enough to explain the excuse why some of you refuse to read the manual............I'm trying to understand in all honesty as I am baffled. For me the thought of not knowing how something works would drive me insane and sitting there twiddling with little knobs is not my idea of fun ha, ha.

I await your replies gentlemen.

There is no reason why, its just because.

At the end of the day, its clear that I had correctly deduced what everyone else is saying, so in effect - I had answered my own question before posting, and was seeking reassurance from other men who had not read the manual that their twiddling had led them to the same place.

The reason I needed this reassurance, is because I couldnt possibly imagine a sat nav system so stupid, primitive and incomprehensible.

See here is something I can understand - nature.

If a tree grows and becomes warped or bent with age, thats nature - it was the way it grew and it had no control over it...

Mankind on the other hand, is strange... We dont read manuals because we dont trust them... why not? Let me tell you as my point is twofold.

Someone had to design the sat nav the way it is - that means they actually determined that the way this system works is the RIGHT way to do it. It didnt (couldnt) have happened by accident... After this person had designed this system, another person came along and signed it off, thinking that it was actually an OK system...

Clearly neither had driven a 6 year old Audi and found that lo and behold all icons are shown unto them as if by some kind of, well, multiple icon viewing technology that happens on its own (wow)

This same 'crack' team of idiots then wrote a manual for it.

Its a manual written by idiots, for an idiotic system, which makes you feel like an idiot just by trying to use it.

Hence - manuals can kiss my teeth thanks, and so can the bloody sat nav.

I am setting it as CarreraSR said and leaving the bloody thing on SpeedCameras.

Bah humbug!

The "idiots" have obviously learnt. The new iDrive is a doddle and without had the petrol stations up on the map in about 15 seconds - very easy to select what you want and what you don't.

Are these the same idiots that designed, engineered and produced your car?

It shows petrol stations on the map as carrerarsr said - it tells you this in the manual

My map only ever shows your current location but you can search for a destination by using the + method zooming in/out accordingly which is a bit fiddly. But, you can request petrol stations either: at current location, nearby or choose a destination. What narks me with all these systems is that the disc is out of date pretty much within a few months and they want couple of hundred quid whatever for a more updated version. Bugger that.

You've got to admit that at least the translation is ok. Have you ever read some of the older Japanese owners handbooks - probably not eh.

I actually enjoy reading manuals.

I once posted a thread which was about when a manual was a piece of artwork that accompanied the item you bought.

Bear in mind my work history is in journalism, reviewing, writing etc so I love the written word as I am sure you can all tell, in addition I love to communicate in a variety of ways because thats just my personality...

I dont want to read the new BMW manuals because they have no soul... I am not neccescarily saying that old ones did... but some cars have had very interesting manuals - some of the Jap cars for example, even when not in English still have flair etc.
